Dear ICNALE Contributors

Quick Checklists for your first trial interview

1. Have you printed-out all the materials below?
(a) Interview Protocol Book
(b) Two Picture Prompts (Should be printed in color)
(c) Two Role-play Cards (Should be with L1 translations)

2. Have you prepared the gadgets below?
(a) A video-camera (or a smartphone)
(b) A toy-mask covering the upper half of the participant's face (Maybe it costs only 1 USD or something. You can buy it in your country.)

3. Have you received an informed consent from the participant?
Please make them fully understand that the interview videos will be later uploaded to the online. (Students' faces and names are NOT made public.)

4. Have you told the first interviewee to answer the online questionnaire?

Answering the questionnaire will take just 10 minutes. After completing the questionnaire, the confirmation code ("1969") is automatically shown to the student. Before you begin the interview, please ask them the code. If they can answer it correctly, it means that they have successfully finished the questionnaire.

5. Have you prepared a quiet room?
Silence in the room is important in terms of securing the quality of the sound.

6. Have you checked the camera angle appropriately so that we can clearly see the participants' body language (including the motion of their hands)?

(Double-click on the pic above and see the instructions)

More samples of the interviews with a good camera angle.

6. Have you watched a sample video?

7. Common advice for the interviewee
(a) In the picture description...
--- You have to make the student begin with "A few weeks ago, a man/ a woman/ a boy ....." (Do not make them use "I"! )
--- You should NOT say Hum or I see or whatever. Students are required to complete the monologue by him/herself.

(b) In the role-play task
You need to behave as if you were a very stubborn teacher / restaurant owner. You need to reject the student's proposal a couple of times.

8. Then, good luck on your first interview!

0. After your first interview, please upload the data of your first interview (the video file) to an online drive you like such as Google Drive and MS One Drive. Then, please let me know the link to the files. You cam compress the video data, if needed. After downloading your data, our team will verify the content and send you some feedback.

Thank you and Good luck!
